XRPScan Warns Community About Fake U.S. Treasury XRP Account Speculations

  • XRPScan flagged an XRP account as spam after rumors of U.S. Treasury affiliation spread within the XRP community.
  • Ripple CTO David Schwartz outlined how to verify account ownership using domain fields and TOML files on the XRP Ledger.
  • XRPScan and developers emphasized the need for caution and verification when engaging with public blockchain accounts.

XRPScan, an XRP Ledger Explorer, has warned the XRP community after reports of an account linked with the U.S. Treasury. The platform labeled the account as spam and urged the community to carefully verify the credibility, and purchase or sell tokens on the public ledger. XRPScan underlined that it is an open data display service of the public blockchain that does not censor the information unless it is obligatory.

Concerns of the community lead to reactions

The warning follows a recent thread on the XRP community’s social media forum where people doubted the authenticity of the account. Rumors on social media sites spiked, and several key individuals in the XRP world chimed in, including Wietse Wind, a well-regarded XRPL developer, and David Schwartz, CTO at Ripple.

According to Wietse Wind, the domain field of XRP Ledger accounts can be easily edited by anyone and does not vouch for the association with the organization it declares to belong to.. He further highlighted that successful Know Your Customer (KYC) checks on such accounts do not necessarily indicate official endorsement. Wind urged users to verify claims independently, reinforcing the principle of “Don’t trust, verify” in blockchain operations.

Ripple CTO Clarifies Ownership Verification

David Schwartz provided additional clarity on how to establish a provable connection between an XRP account and a domain owner. He stated that the domain field in an account can only be set by its owner, while the corresponding TOML file must be controlled by the domain owner. If the two match, it creates a verifiable link. Schwartz demonstrated the process for users seeking to confirm account authenticity.

Caution Advised in Blockchain Transactions

XRPScan’s warning serves as a reminder of the risks associated with public blockchains. While blockchain technology offers transparency, it also enables anyone to create accounts and set unverifiable fields. The XRP community is encouraged to remain vigilant and adopt robust verification practices to avoid potential scams or misinformation.
