AI agents are no longer limited to posting content or automating tasks. According to Base, agents now pay for services across its network using wallets and stablecoins, with more than 3.1 million transactions and $1.2 million transferred over the last 30 days as of May 29, 2026. The update comes as Base expands infrastructure for AI-driven commerce, while Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong urged businesses to prepare for AI agents as customers.
Agents Move Beyond Social Activity
According to Base, the first wave of agent adoption focused largely on social interactions and community activity. Between October 2024 and February 2025, nearly 16,000 agents launched on Virtuals.io, an AI agent platform that allows users to create agents and tokens.
Since then, agent capabilities have expanded. Improved AI models now handle planning, analysis, coding, research, and execution tasks. At the same time, wallet integration became easier, stablecoin usage increased, and transaction costs fell to fractions of a cent.
As a result, agents gained the ability to pay for services directly. According to Base, agents increasingly complete tasks without requiring humans to manage subscriptions or approve every transaction.
Demand Grows for Specialized Services
With payment capabilities in place, agents now purchase services needed to complete specific tasks. According to Base, research agents buy search data and content sources, while finance agents purchase market information and execution tools.
Notably, several providers already support these workflows. Venice enables payments for AI inference services. Meanwhile, BlockRunAI offers access to more than 50 AI models with USDC-based settlement on Base.
Research remains a major category. Exa supplies search capabilities, while Wolfram Alpha provides computational services. In addition, agentic.market combines several research tools into workflows focused on hiring trends, salaries, and company analysis.
Infrastructure Expands Across Industries
Beyond research, Base highlighted growing adoption across travel and developer infrastructure. Tripadvisor provides reviews and localized search capabilities, while FlightAware offers real-time flight information. Amadeus supports hotel and flight bookings.
Meanwhile, Cloudflare supports x402 payments and participates in the x402 Foundation. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Payments also integrates x402 and Coinbase wallet infrastructure for enterprise workflows.
Base stated that future development will focus on earning agents. The company cited examples including Felix, which reported more than $261,395 in revenue, and Kelly Claude, which generates income through applications, books, and other digital products.
Brian Armstrong commented on the trend, stating, “Make sure your business is ready to accept AI agents as customers.”
