  • OpenAI surpasses 1 million paid users, plans premium tiers with advanced AI features.
  • Competition heats up as xAI, Elon Musk’s venture, emerges as a potential rival to OpenAI.
  • OpenAI prepares for a new funding round, potential valuation could exceed $100 billion.

OpenAI has reached a significant milestone by surpassing 1 million paid users across its various business services, including ChatGPT Enterprise, Team, and Edu. This achievement marks a 67% increase in user base since April 2024, when the company reported having 600,000 users.

As OpenAI continues to grow, the company is preparing to introduce higher-tier subscription options aimed at businesses seeking advanced AI capabilities. These new plans, expected to launch alongside upcoming AI models like Strawberry and Orion, may be priced as high as $2,000 per month.

While OpenAI’s user base continues to expand, the company faces increasing competition from new players in the AI sector. Notably, Elon Musk‘s AI venture, xAI, has emerged as a potential competitor.

Launched in July 2023, xAI introduced its Grok-2 AI assistant, available to X (formerly Twitter) users with premium subscriptions. Musk has indicated that xAI could become a direct rival to OpenAI by late 2024, signaling a potential shakeup in the AI market.

In its growth, OpenAI is also planning for its next funding round with Apple and Nvidia among the interested companies. This round could possibly take OpenAI’s valuation to more than $100 billion in a single round. OpenAI’s current investor Microsoft is set to join the next funding round, having poured in $13 billion and holding a 49% stake in the firm.

On the 29th of August in the year 2024, OpenAI shared that the number of weekly active users of ChatGPT had more than doubled within the last year reaching over 200 million users. Nevertheless, the company’s revenue has not followed through the same path, with the annualized sales estimated at $3. According to the current data, it will reach 4 billion by May 2024.

OpenAI has taken a public stance in the regulatory arena on California’s AB 3211 AI bill, which proposes mandatory watermarks on AI-generated content to ensure transparency. While OpenAI supports this measure, it has opposed SB 1047, a separate bill requiring safety testing for AI models. These positions reflect the company’s approach to navigating the evolving legislative landscape surrounding AI technologies.
