- Buterin to endorse only L2s achieving “stage 1+” status, ensuring enhanced security.
- New standard: 75% council threshold to override proof, boosting decentralization in rollups.
- ZK-rollups on track for stage 1 by year-end; multisig dominance fading in favor of cryptographic trust.
Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has announced a significant shift in his approach to discussing Layer 2 (L2) scaling solutions starting next year. In a recent post on his X account, Buterin emphasized that he will only publicly endorse L2 projects that have reached “stage 1+” status, marking a critical move towards enhancing the security and decentralization of rollups.
Beginning in 2024, Buterin plans to mention only L2s that have achieved at least stage 1 status in blogs, talks, and other public forums. This change signals the end of leniency toward projects claiming to be on the path to decentralization.
Buterin highlighted that the new standard would require a 75% threshold on the council to override the proof system, with at least 26% of the council being independent of the rollup team.
This move underscores the growing emphasis on cryptographic trust over reliance on multisigs, which have dominated the ecosystem thus far.
Buterin expressed optimism about ZK-rollups’ future, noting that multiple teams are on track to reach stage 1 by the end of the year.
He underscored the importance of not discarding essential safety measures, such as training wheels until the community is confident in the security of the proof systems.
While stage 1 sets a new standard, Buterin also alluded to the possibility of moving towards stage 2. In this next phase, rollups would be truly backed by code, with the security council’s role limited to intervening only if there are discrepancies within the code itself. One potential path towards this goal involves utilizing multiple prover implementations to ensure the system’s integrity.
Buterin’s statement marks a pivotal moment for the Ethereum ecosystem as it transitions from the era of multisig-dependent rollups to one where cryptographic trust becomes the norm.
By the end of the year, the expectations for rollup projects will be higher, with stage 1 serving as the new baseline for public recognition.
