Revolut has announced the integration of the Bitcoin Lightning Network through a partnership with Lightspark, enabling users in the United Kingdom and select European Economic Area countries to conduct faster and lower-cost crypto payments. This is aimed at enhancing the speed of the transactions and the charges that the holders have to pay to do transfers in the digital asset on the platform.
This integration will help offer the users of Revolut access to the Layer 2 solution to Bitcoin, which is renowned for instant and inexpensive transactions. Lightspark’s integration into Revolut’s platform means that the users can now transact on Bitcoin at a faster and convenient way.
Improved user experience and reduced settlement times
According to Revolut’s General Manager of Crypto, Emil Urmanshin, this move aligns with the company’s objective to offer more accessible and cost-effective financial services. He stated that integrating the Lightning Network is part of Revolut’s broader strategy to streamline digital transactions and improve user experience through better speed and pricing.
This announcement comes shortly after Revolut launched its crypto exchange app, Revolut X, for mobile users in the UK and EEA. The app supports over 400 crypto trading pairs and includes access to 220 digital tokens. It follows the earlier desktop release and reflects the company’s push to expand its crypto services across Europe.
Lightspark adds Universal Money Address support
Lightspark’s infrastructure also introduces Universal Money Address (UMA) functionality, which allows users to link email-like identifiers to wallet addresses. This addition simplifies the payment process by reducing the need for long wallet strings, helping to make crypto payments more intuitive.
Revolut joins a growing number of global fintech firms turning to the Lightning Network to modernize digital payments. Lightspark CEO David Marcus said the collaboration represents a step toward more efficient financial systems, likening traditional banking infrastructure to outdated technology in a fast-moving digital environment.
