Proton is now formally launching its self-custodial Bitcoin wallet on iOS, Android, and the web. The startup, which prioritizes privacy, seeks to make Bitcoin transactions easier. In addition, Proton Wallet embeds end-to-end encryption, granting control of funds only to the holder. Unlike major exchanges, the platform eliminates various third-party risks: hacking or account bans included.
A Privacy-Centric Approach to Bitcoin
Proton is popular for its Proton VPN and Proton Mail services which are different. The organisation doesn’t issue tokens or operate a cryptocurrency exchange. Rather, it is a nonprofit that places a strong focus on digital sovereignty and privacy online.
Bitcoin may be safely bought, stored, and transferred by users with Proton Wallet. Additionally, the wallet has a novel way to send Bitcoin via email. Provided both sender and recipient are using Proton Wallet, the transaction only needs an email address. This feature offers a solution to the hassle of dealing with lengthy Bitcoin addresses, thus minimizing human errors.
Security and Transparency at the Core
Security remains a key focus. The wallet employs Proton’s battle-tested encryption, ensuring private data stays protected. Moreover, it is an open-source platform, allowing independent audits for transparency. Users retain full control of their encryption keys, meaning Proton cannot access their Bitcoin.
Proton Wallet enhances privacy by encrypting transaction data on users’ devices. Additionally, it automatically rotates Bitcoin addresses for incoming payments. This feature makes it harder to trace transactions, boosting financial anonymity.
A Step Toward Financial Freedom
Proton has supported Bitcoin for years. In 2014, it relied on Bitcoin donations after PayPal temporarily blocked contributions. Consequently, the company believes Bitcoin aligns with its mission of digital and financial freedom.
The wallet launched exclusively for Proton Visionary plan users in July 2024. Since then, over 100,000 users participated in early access. Feedback from this phase helped refine the final release. Currently, Proton Wallet supports only Bitcoin. However, future updates may integrate additional cryptocurrencies and even fiat options, depending on user demand.
