Len Sassaman’s chances of being identified as Satoshi Nakamoto have significantly decreased, with Polymarket odds falling below 30%. This shift occurred just hours after the market previously had Sassaman as the leading candidate for being Bitcoin’s creator, holding over 55% of the wagers.

Sassaman, a renowned cryptographer known for his work on PGP encryption and his deep ties to the Cypherpunk movement, has long been considered a potential candidate to be the elusive Satoshi Nakamoto.

His advocacy for privacy technologies and the timing of his death in 2011, coinciding with Nakamoto’s disappearance, further fueled speculation.

However, doubts have emerged, particularly following comments made by his widow, Meredith Patterson. Despite his significant role in cryptography, Patterson publicly rejected the theory that Sassaman could be Bitcoin’s creator.

In a recent statement, she expressed skepticism, stating that while the research connecting him to Nakamoto was thorough, it did not reflect her knowledge of her late husband.

Adding to the uncertainty, Alphracta CEO Joao Wedson uncovered old tweets from Sassaman in which he downplayed the significance of Bitcoin, calling it overhyped and stating he hadn’t analyzed it in detail. These revelations and Patterson’s remarks quickly influenced Polymarket, causing Sassaman’s odds to plummet.

The betting pool on Polymarket, which has attracted nearly $2.4 million as of October 5, centers on HBO’s upcoming documentary, Money Electric, The Bitcoin Mystery.

The film, directed by Cullen Hoback, has sparked widespread speculation about the potential revelation of Satoshi Nakamoto’s true identity. Promotional materials have hinted at a major reveal, but HBO has remained silent.

The crypto market has long speculated on Nakamoto’s identity, with names like Hal Finney, Nick Szabo, Adam Back, and others being floated over the years. Sassaman’s inclusion in this list initially sparked interest due to his cryptography contributions and alignment with Bitcoin’s principles.

However, with fresh doubts surrounding his potential involvement, the focus may soon shift to other candidates as the documentary’s premiere approaches.
