According to analyst Ignas, Ethereum’s valuation has sparked debate as activity shifts to Layer 2 solutions. Many believe lower fees signal weakness. However, this view is shortsighted. Ethereum’s true value extends beyond mere transaction fees. Its security, decentralization, and role in DeFi make it a critical asset. While networks like Tron ($TRX) generate higher fees, they lack Ethereum’s ecosystem strength. Hence, equating lower fees with diminished value ignores the broader picture.

Ethereum’s Role in a Digital Economy

Ethereum serves as more than just digital oil. It is a store of value within the digital economy. Unlike Bitcoin, which hedges against inflation and macro instability, Ethereum functions as yield-bearing collateral. Platforms like MakerDAO and Ethena rely on ETH’s stability for lending and borrowing. Additionally, Ethereum’s strong developer activity and Total Value Locked (TVL) reinforce its dominance. Consequently, its role remains vital despite fee reductions.

Besides, lower fees indicate successful Layer 2 scaling rather than network decline. Standard Chartered’s ETH price forecast was slashed from $10,000 to $4,000 due to L2 outsourcing. However, this overlooks how Ethereum evolves. Its ecosystem now supports multiple scaling solutions, enhancing usability and long-term adoption.

Buterin’s Hybrid-Proof Proposal

Vitalik Buterin recently proposed a hybrid-proof architecture for Ethereum’s rollups. The system integrates zero-knowledge proofs (ZK), optimistic rollups (OP), and trusted execution environments (TEEs). This approach prevents reliance on a single security method. Moreover, it strengthens Ethereum’s decentralization goals.

Ethereum’s roadmap pushes rollups from Stage 1 to Stage 2. Currently, rollups depend on a seven-day challenge period for finality. Buterin’s model introduces a three-prover system to accelerate confirmation. If two out of three mechanisms validate a state root, it finalizes immediately. Otherwise, it falls back to an optimistic model, preserving security.

Additionally, a security council is proposed to safeguard against failures. This council can upgrade TEE logic instantly and adjust ZK or OP systems with delays. If contradictory outcomes arise, it intervenes to maintain system integrity.
