  • Trump leading on X raises concerns over platform’s political bias under Elon Musk.
  • Polls posted by Musk show Trump’s domination of the contest and raise questions over neutrality on X.
  • Crypto community support of Trump on X fuels speculation of a right-leaning bias.

The reinstatement of former President Donald Trump on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, has raised many questions about bias on the platform. These followed new polls and remarks from influential figures, especially regarding the impending 2024 U.S. presidential election.

Elon Musk polled users on the X social media platform about identifying as Democrat, Republican, or Independent. The poll became broadly notable, with over 5.8 million users voting. Former President Trump dominated another Musk poll with 73% of the vote, well over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

This poll’s result has triggered a wave of jubilation among Trump’s supporters; at the same time, though, it once again raises questions about how fair and neutral a platform it is, considering Musk’s known political inclinations.

Critics have warned that Musk’s control could drive the platform to the right wing. Influencer Brian Krassenstein has warned that X will become an “echo chamber if this continues.” Cautioning similarly, Galaxy CEO Mike Novogratz posted on X, mentioning the platform as “Fox News 2.0” while raising a red flag over the growing right-wing slant.

In the middle of all this is the cryptocurrency community, which has resolved massively to rally behind Trump on X. Trump’s perceived pro-crypto stance has won him much admiration from those operating in this space of digital assets, thus fanning the flames of speculation over business on the platform.

Elon Musk’s past involvement in the crypto industry added to the concerns, and some users are now questioning the platform’s neutrality as the 2024 election draws closer.

With Trump gaining favor in X, the platform has increased pressure to accommodate well-balanced discourses. The latest polls magnified concerns that the site was giving an unusual boost to the Republican candidate and, hence, modulating public opinion.

Mike Novogratz’s warning that X will turn into a “right-leaning echo chamber” expresses how diversity in views is essential to keep the playing field level even with a critical election cycle at hand.
