  • Coinbase will sponsor the Grey Cup coin toss as part of its Canadian expansion strategy, targeting CFL’s devoted fanbase.

Coinbase has joined the Canadian Football League (CFL) as its first official cryptocurrency partner, marking a historic collaboration in Canadian sports. The partnership includes the upcoming 111th Grey Cup championship game in Vancouver, where Coinbase will sponsor the ceremonial coin toss. As part of the collaboration, CFL fans can also benefit from special promotions that introduce them to cryptocurrency.

Coinbase revealed that approximately 13% of Canadians around five million people already hold some form of cryptocurrency. This growing interest in digital assets makes Canada one of the platform’s most crypto-aware markets. Through this partnership, Coinbase aims to engage Canada’s CFL fans and expand its reach across the country.

New Incentives for CFL Fans

Coinbase plans to attract CFL fans to its platform by offering exclusive incentives. Canadian fans who complete their first trade on Coinbase’s mobile app or website will receive $25 in Bitcoin as a welcome bonus. Moreover, Coinbase is incorporating interactive experiences at CFL games, including QR codes that fans can scan for a chance to win various prizes, such as season tickets and Bitcoin rewards.

For one lucky winner, the platform is offering a substantial grand prize of $50,000 in Bitcoin. This prize package also includes an all-expenses-paid trip to the 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg next year, offering a memorable experience for avid fans. The initiatives signify Coinbase’s commitment to engaging CFL supporters and building a stronger crypto community in Canada.

Coinbase’s Growing Canadian Presence

Coinbase officially launched its Canadian operations in 2023 and quickly gained prominence in the market, becoming the first international exchange to register as a Restricted Dealer in the country. This status enables Coinbase to operate under Canadian regulatory standards, building trust among users in a rapidly evolving financial landscape.

As part of its expansion in Canada, Coinbase aims to strengthen ties with local sports organizations, with the CFL partnership reflecting this focus. According to Coinbase Canada’s CEO, Lucas Matheson, the CFL’s strong fanbase presents an ideal opportunity to introduce Canadians to the potential of digital assets. “Together, we’re working to deepen Canadians’ connection to crypto, offering tools and opportunities to participate in the digital economy,” Matheson said.

A New Era of Fan Engagement

The 111th Grey Cup game will be held at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium on November 17, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. Adding to the excitement, the Grey Cup halftime show will feature a performance by the Jonas Brothers, ensuring a memorable event for fans.

This collaboration with Coinbase reflects the CFL’s commitment to innovation and fan engagement. Tyler Keenan, the CFL’s Chief Revenue Officer, expressed enthusiasm for working with a forward-thinking partner like Coinbase. Keenan noted that the partnership enables the league to enhance its offerings, providing CFL fans with novel ways to interact with the game.
