- Vitalik Buterin sees ZK Proofs as a game-changer for social media, enhancing privacy and scalability in decentralized platforms.
- ZK Proofs offers granular data control, unlike Web 2.0 platforms that often expose more user information.
- Using ZK Proofs can prevent account bans and shadow-banning, improving user control in decentralized social media.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin highlighted the revolutionary potential of Zero Knowledge (ZK) Proofs. Buterin gave a talk at ETHCC [7] in Brussels on how ZK Proofs could improve scalability and privacy in decentralized social networks.
This cryptographic method is revolutionary for privacy-conscious social protocols since it permits data verification without disclosing private information.
Enhancing Privacy and Data Control
ZK Proofs enable users to control their data and restrict third-party access. Buterin noted that this is crucial for effective content filtering and data management. However, he also stressed that social protocols need an innovative front-end experience to complement the technical advantages of ZK Proofs.
He cited platforms like Farcaster, which resembles X (formerly Twitter), and Flink, which offers a Reddit-like experience. Buterin highlighted that decentralized social platforms could benefit from a multi-community architecture, enhancing user autonomy and interaction.
Other panelists at the conference also weighed in on the benefits of ZK Proofs. Chris Goes from Anoma pointed out that ZK Proofs offer granular control over data disclosure. This contrasts sharply with Web 2.0 platforms, which often aim to expose more user information. Hence, ZK Proofs not only protect privacy but also facilitate selective information sharing.
Moreover, ZK Proof technology is less resource-intensive than traditional methods. This makes it ideal for handling large datasets and scaling social platforms. Elias Tazartes from Kakarot mentioned the Lens Protocol’s new chain, which uses ZK compression to enhance scalability.
Improving User Control and Addressing MEV Issues
Shumo Chu of Nebra Labs highlighted another advantage of ZK Proofs. They can prevent issues related to account bans and shadow-banning on traditional social media platforms. Using ZK Proofs, decentralized social media offers resilience against such centralized actions, ensuring better user control and ownership.
Despite these advantages, the panelists agreed that education is crucial. Users need to understand the benefits of data ownership and information control. Buterin proposed integrating ZK technology from Zupoll, a tool for anonymous voting, into decentralized platforms like Farcaster. This approach aligns with decentralization and privacy principles.
In addition to discussing ZK Proofs, Buterin also addressed the miner extracted value (MEV) problem. He proposed techniques such as MEV minimization quarantine and reduced node requirements to mitigate its impact. These strategies aim to reduce network congestion and lower transaction costs.
