- Len Sassaman leads Polymarket bets with a 47% chance of being revealed as Bitcoin’s creator in an upcoming HBO documentary.
- Sassaman’s cryptography work, including PGP encryption, has drawn comparisons to Bitcoin’s structure, fueling Satoshi speculation.
- HBO’s new documentary may reveal Satoshi Nakamoto, but promotional material leaves the mystery open, keeping viewers in suspense.
A new HBO documentary, set to air on October 8, has raised speculations about the true identity of Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Len Sassaman, a renowned cryptographer and key figure in the cypherpunk movement, has emerged as the frontrunner, according to Polymarket betting pools.
Sassaman, who tragically took his own life in 2011, now holds a 47% chance of being revealed as Satoshi, according to the prediction market. While Politico reports that the documentary may uncover Nakamoto’s identity, HBO’s promotional material stops short of confirming this, leaving viewers and experts guessing.
Sassaman’s Cryptography Legacy
Sassaman’s role in cryptography has drawn attention to him as a strong Satoshi candidate. From development on encrypting communications using PGP, right on to remailer technology, his work was steeped in principles of privacy and decentralized systems.
His collaboration with other famous cryptographers, such as Hal Finney and David Chaum, finally set him within the cypherpunk sector. Advocates of this theory mention that his proficiency in cryptographic technologies had similarities with Bitcoin’s architecture.
The Evan Leung Hatch Hypothesis
Speculation surrounding Sassaman intensified following a 2021 study by Evan Leung Hatch. Hatch examined Sassaman’s cryptographic contributions and pointed to similarities between Sassaman’s late-night activities and Nakamoto’s patterns of posting Bitcoin code.
He also highlighted the proximity of Sassaman’s death to Nakamoto’s sudden disappearance from public view in 2011. A crucial aspect of Hatch’s theory is a final message from Nakamoto two months before Sassaman’s death, in which Nakamoto stated, “I’ve moved on to other things.”
Polymarket Bets and Remaining Candidates
Polymarket’s betting pool has seen Sassaman rise as the leading candidate, followed by early Bitcoin contributor and Sassaman associate Hal Finney, who has a 15% chance. Notably, Finney himself has long been speculated to be Satoshi due to his involvement in early Bitcoin transactions.
Other speculations, such as Craig Wright, Elon Musk, and Dorian Nakamoto, have far lower odds, with Wright holding just 2% in the predictions. However, the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator remains uncertain, as HBO’s promotional material has yet to make any definitive claims.
