The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially intervened in Pavel Durov’s (Telegram CEO) ongoing detention in France. The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has formally requested the French government to provide immediate consular assistance to Durov, who holds dual citizenship in France and the UAE. 

This development comes as French authorities have extended the tech executive’s detention amid an ongoing judicial investigation.

On August 27, the UAE’s MoFA made it clear that it had contacted the French Government to request all the required consular services for Durov.

The story of Pavel Durov’s arrest in France has become headlines all over the world, the Tribunal Judiciaire de Paris has ordered his detention for an additional 72 colons.

This followed the dismissal of a dozen charges, including fraud, drug-related terrorism, cyber terrorism, organized crime, and terrorism promotion and associating with terrorist organizations that have been on Durov.

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Durov’s arrest was part of an ongoing judicial investigation and clarified that it was not politically motivated.

The arrest of Pavel Durov has led to international debates on issues of free speech and government control over tech platforms. Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of Russia’s State Duma, has accused the Biden administration of being behind Durov’s arrest, suggesting that the U.S. is attempting to influence Telegram through France.

This allegation adds a layer of geopolitical tension to the situation, although it remains unconfirmed by other sources.
