He demanded 660,000 USDT, a virtual currency worth about HK$5.15 million. He told the boy’s parents to download Telegram and buy the USDT from an offline OTC store.
Late at night, officers from the Police Organized Crime and Triad Bureau (OCTB) started investigating. Several detectives reviewed CCTV footage from the shopping mall and nearby areas to find the kidnapper. By early morning on July 4, the police had arrested two suspects and rescued the boy.
Images of the incident circulated widely on the internet, showing CCTV footage of a man in a light-colored shirt and a duck-bill hat covering the boy’s mouth with a handkerchief. Other images included a photo of the police investigating the scene and a message in simplified Chinese stating, “Please do not call the police for the safety of the children.” The message also directed the parents to download Telegram to contact the kidnapper.
One screenshot believed to be from the Telegram conversation showed the kidnapper demanding the virtual currency and warning, “There is no USDT present and it will not be online again.” The screenshot also included a recent photo of the boy appearing asleep.
Around 11 PM on July 3, plainclothes police officers were at Tseung Kwan O Plaza. Some officers checked the CCTV footage, while others looked into nearby shops and malls. The detectives did not share any details about the investigation.
According to sources, the police received the kidnapping report around 4:30 PM on July 3. The case was promptly handed over to the Organized Crime and Triad Investigation Bureau. By approximately 5:25 AM on July 4, the police successfully located and rescued the boy in Tseung Kwan O District and arrested two suspects involved in the kidnapping.
The Hong Kong police have assured that further details regarding the case will be provided later. This rapid response and successful rescue highlight the efficiency and dedication of the Hong Kong police force in handling such critical situations.
