  • UNODC and Binance collaborate on the TechSafeSpace campaign to combat cybercrime in East and Southeast Asia, emphasizing public-private partnerships.
  •  The campaign promotes safe technology use, digital inclusion, and human rights protection, focusing on the growing threat of cyber-enabled fraud.
  • Global cooperation and collective action are highlighted as essential in addressing cybercrime, aligning with international efforts to secure the ICT ecosystem.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has launched the TechSafeSpace campaign, in collaboration with Binance, to tackle the growing threat of cybercrime. This initiative focuses on promoting public-private partnerships to enhance cybersecurity efforts and ensure safer technology use. The campaign targets cybercrime in East and Southeast Asia, where digital fraud driven by transnational organized crime groups has surged.

Public-Private Collaboration Essential

Binance, a key partner in this campaign, emphasized the critical importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors to effectively combat cybercrime. By pooling resources and expertise, these partnerships can counter the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by cybercriminals. Binance highlighted that joint efforts are essential in the face of rapidly evolving cyber threats that endanger both individual and collective security.

It’s a multi-stakeholder awareness campaign aimed at promoting the safe use of technology whilst promoting digital equality and protection of the human rights of users. The idea of the campaign is to enhance the safe use of the Internet by providing necessary information about the positive use of ICT. This serves to highlight the need to promote the positive effects of technology to all stakeholders to reduce risks as much as possible.

Rising Cybercrime in Asia

According to the latest UNODC reports, there is a rapid increase in cyber-enabled frauds in East and Southeast Asia including those empowered by transnational crime syndicates. This increase puts a concern on a call for increased cooperation and the development of sound measures to deal with these threats. TechSafeSpace focuses on changing the population’s behavior to remediate these challenges through the TechSafeSpace campaign.

Global Cooperation for Cybersecurity

The world’s information and communication technology, often referred to as ICT, is gradually growing to be prone to be exploited by state and non-state actors. This of course is a considerable threat to international peace and security.

The UNODC emphasizes the perspective on international cooperation in the mentioned questions, following the General Assembly’s resolution of 2022 on responsible state behavior in the use of ICT. Thus, the plan of the intergovernmental committee to develop the international convention on ICT-related crimes supports the continent’s call for internationally coordinated responses.
