  • Ripple filed a trademark application for “Ripple Custody,” covering cryptocurrency and fiat custody software solutions in the U.S.
  • The USPTO has recorded the application but has not yet assigned an examiner, delaying final approval.
  • Ripple continues its custody expansion, following its $250 million acquisition of Metaco and the launch of a “bank-grade” custody service.

San Francisco-based blockchain firm Ripple has submitted an application for the “Ripple Custody” trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The filing covers software solutions designed to secure both cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies. The application has been recorded, but an examiner has not yet been assigned for review. This means the trademark is still awaiting approval.

Trademark Review Process and Possible Challenges

It may take several months before the USPTO reviews and decides on the application. The process involves verifying whether a similar trademark already exists. If a conflicting mark is found, the application could face rejection. Until the review is completed, Ripple’s custody-related software remains in development without official trademark protection.

This trademark application suggests that Ripple is gradually diversifying into the custody segment. In 2023 the company invested $250 million on obtaining Metaco, a custody firm based in Switzerland. Of course, this acquisition made it possible for Ripple to strengthen its position in the custody business. In October 2024, to increase security of assets the company has launched a custody service which was referred as to be of ‘bank-grade’.

Previous Trademark Filings and Business Strategy

Last year, Ripple applied for multiple trademarks, including “Ripple Payments,” “RLUSD,” and “Ripple USD.” The latest filing suggests a deeper commitment to the custody segment. With an increased focus on digital asset security, the company continues to expand its enterprise blockchain solutions.

The USPTO’s review process determines whether “Ripple Custody” meets trademark eligibility requirements. The company must wait for an official decision, which could take months. If approved, the trademark would grant Ripple exclusive rights to use the name for its custody solutions. If rejected, Ripple may need to modify or reapply. The application remains under review as no examiner has been assigned yet.
